Somalia: Covering the Cities of Death

Mogadishu, Baidoa and Oddur shared the common story of widespread death by famine and civil war. American marines found live explosives along the roads, hidden from sight by dry brush in fields where children played. I witnessed the first U.S. troops leaving Baidoa to go home and provided TV and network radio coverage. We heard machine gun fire in the distance. At left, in Oddur, I considered myself one of the most fortunate 22-year-old reporters in the business. UPI Radio and WCSC-TV helped make the coverage possible.

At The Citadel, Shannon Faulkner always said she would be willing to shave her head.

America is still recovering from the bombing in Oklahoma City.

In Florida, Hurricane Opal caused some of the worst damage of the season.
